The different names like Pinjari, Bahana and Dhunia appear to be used inter changeably, for the Pinjara community in Maharashtra. The name Pinjara is derived from the word piryan. A cotton bow and dhuniafrom dhunna to card cotton. This community is divided into two sub-groups:
(i) Teli Piryari : These people extract oil from oil seeds.
(ii) Ghatore: These people live near the Ghat area of Chhindwara district in Madhya Pradesh.
The literacy rate among them is low. Some are clerks in banks and posted as a tahasUdar, lecturer, daroga, businessmen,Teacher, representative in gram panchayat and panchayat samiti, private practitioners. doctors and lecturers in colleges. For health and medical care they go to a doctor and for any diseases they visit the nearby health centre.
