Gond People Group

The Gond people of Central India is classified as a scheduled tribe by the Indian Government, and live within throughout the states of Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Mahārāshtra, Bihār, and Orissa (Encyclopedia Britannica). As the largest tribe in Central India, with a population of over four million (Indian Census 2001), the Gond became an important political constituency when Reservation was initiated. Due to their low caste and thus low income, the Gond have been historically resistant to sending their children to schools (Library of Congress). Because of this, the Gond have retained the aboriginal Gondi languages developed within their niches of habitation throughout Central India.
